Factors That Lead To Recidivism - 1353 Words

Research Question/Objective: What are some factors that lead to recidivism of female juvenile offenders? The objective to this question is to find out whether sexual abuse and environmental factors lead to recidivism amongst girl juvenile offenders. These are two factors that have not been researched enough amongst juvenile offenders and can be addressed to help guide these girls to a better path in their lives. Recidivism: Recidivism is when a convicted criminal has the tendency to reoffend. It often results in people getting rearrested or return to prison after being released. One study in 2005 by Matthew Durose (2014) finds that about two-thirds of released prisoners are rearrested within three years of release and more than half were†¦show more content†¦These two factors have sparked my interest in finding other factors that influence recidivism among juvenile offenders, more specifically, females. Importance: Understanding risk factors helps identify youth who may need intervention and other types of support to prevent or reduce continued system involvement. This is important because we are seeing more girls committing crimes and reoffending. In a Pew research, it showed that about one-third of juvenile corrections agencies do not regularly report recidivism rates...and fewer than half share recidivism data with all three branches of government (Anon, 2014). If juvenile corrections agencies are not collecting nor reporting recidivism rates, these kids are being left behind and often fall in the cracks of the system. It is important to review these statistics in order to help these youths find their way to a better future. Literature Review: During the 1990s, there was an increase in juvenile crime rate which lead to the public requesting for more punitive. State-level juvenile recidivism rates vary but are as high as 55% and there has been a 28% increase in juvenile confinement (Grunwald, 2010).
